What To Wear To Your Engagement Shoot

I think the question I always get asked the most when talking to my brides is, “What do I wear to my engagement shoot?” The engagement shoot is one of the most fun times of us working together. Just a fun few hours to be a silly and get amazing photos with no stress. Does anything sound better than that?! So what do you wear to your engagement shoot? Let’s get into it!

A favorite engagement shoot with Ana and Michael is on the blog. To see all of the photos head here.

Dress It Up

Have you ever wanted to get dressed up in a sequined gown, tulle skirt or flower crown but just never had an chance to do it? This is your chance! Remember: There is no such thing as “too dressed up” when it comes to your engagement session, so don’t be afraid to get dressed up and have some fun! If you want to do it up but don’t want to add a new permanent piece to your collection, a lot of my brides love Rent the Runway for their engagement photos because you don’t have to spend a lot to feel like a million bucks. Plus, you can send the outfits back when the session is over. OR if you really love it you can keep it at a discounted price! Other brides love having a great excuse to bring a new permanent piece (or two!) into their closet! I know I love any excuse to buy a cute new dress or a long flowy skirt! The key takeaway here is, just do you!

Quick Tip: There’s no such thing as too dressed up!

My brides also LOVE (and to be honest I also LOVE since I bought both of these and wear them all the time!!) these skirts from Amazon! Both are under $50 and look AMAZING on you and in photos! Win Win WIN WIN WIN! The blue skirt pictured is actually so stretchy and comfortable and is a one size fits all, the sizes you see are actually LENGTH size! How cool is that? And comes in like 20 colors! The pink skirt pictured also has a stretchy waist for extra comfort and comes in the prettiest colors!

I am also obsessed with each of these tops for the above flowy skirts! So cute!

Say Yes To The Dress

I definitely recommend going with dresses or skirts for your shoot over pants. Long, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they add movement to photos. Especially when set against nature, like the beach, forest, plains or desert. Cute, shorter-length dresses photograph beautifully as well. Dresses and skirts tend to look most stunning on camera because they really flatter the female body — which is probably why the red carpet is always full of so many dresses and not very many pants!

Choosing Your Colors

When choosing colors I really recommend selecting lighter tones and more muted shades. By avoiding ultra-bright, bold colors, it will help bring all the attention to your faces and let the eye focus on the way you feel about each other. I also would avoid small patterns and prints. It can again be very distracting and take away the focus from the subject, YOU! The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown and white. That softer color palette fits beautifully into almost all natural outdoor environments.

Making A Statement

Pairing an accessory or two with your outfit can really help bring some extra dimension to your images. Big statement necklaces bring a lot of pop to the photos, while the smaller, delicate ones are not as noticeable on camera. Belts, bracelets and earrings bring great visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention. Fresh florals in a crown or bouquet can be a really romantic touch as well.
